Prof. Fee: $0
Homework: no
Hours/Week: 1
Max/Min Students: 12/6
Grade Range: 5-7SO ** This is a semester-only class with open enrollment. **
Course Description: This one semester class will use hands-on experiments to introduce students to the scientific method. We will be studying various subjects including air pressure, Newtons laws of motion, potential and kinetic energy and flight.
Course Expectations: The students will gain a full understanding of each aspect of a lab report: purpose, procedure, hypothesis, observation and conclusion. In class, we will learn how to research a topic, form a hypothesis, test, record data and use critical analysis to form conclusions that reflect scientific concepts. Through reading at home, hands-on experiments, and lab reports, students will be prepared to move on to middle school science.
This is a more informal science class - more focused on hands-on learning and discussion instead of graded assignments.
Prerequisites: none
Workload: Light to moderate. Each student will need to read the short research notes before class. There will be a couple weeks where the students will need internet access to conduct their own research. We will cover one topic every 2 weeks. Students will need to complete a lab report after each experiment is completed. At the end of the session, the student will design, conduct, and present their own experiment on a science fair board.
Teacher provides all materials for in class experiments. Students provide: notebook, folder, pencils. Tri fold board for Science Fair.
